Jaw complaints are more common than many people realise. Pain while chewing, a clicking or cracking jaw joint, a stiff jaw, or pain radiating to the head, neck or ears — these symptoms can significantly affect daily life. What many people don't know is that a chiropractor can often help effectively.
What causes jaw pain?
The jaw joint (also known as the temporomandibular joint or TMJ) connects the lower jaw to the skull. This joint works closely with the muscles of the jaw, face and neck. When this system is out of balance, symptoms can arise such as:
- Pain in or around the jaw joint
- Clicking, popping or cracking when opening or closing the mouth
- Limited mouth opening or a jaw that feels "stuck"
- Pain while chewing or yawning
- Radiating pain to the head, neck or ears
- Teeth grinding (bruxism), often at night
- Tension in the jaw or temple muscles
Common causes
- Stress and tension — physical stress is often stored in the jaw and neck muscles
- Teeth grinding or clenching — overloads the jaw joint and surrounding muscles
- Neck posture problems — the jaw and cervical spine are closely connected; neck issues can cause or worsen jaw complaints
- Trauma — a blow, fall or whiplash injury involving the jaw
- Dental treatment — keeping the mouth open for extended periods can temporarily overload the joint
How chiropractic helps
When treating jaw complaints, we look beyond the jaw joint itself — we also assess the neck, head and posture. This broader perspective makes the difference, because jaw complaints are rarely isolated to one area.
Depending on our findings, we may use the following techniques:
- Spinal and jaw joint adjustments — to restore movement and distribute load more evenly
- Jaw mobilisation — gentle movement techniques to reduce stiffness and pain
- Soft tissue techniques — targeting tension in the jaw and neck muscles
- Dry needling — for persistent muscle tension in the jaw or temple muscles
- Postural advice and exercises — so you can support your own recovery at home
